Do I have dysphagia?

Updated: May 10, 2023

trouble swallowing

What is dysphagia? It is a medical term for difficulty swallowing. Like many medical issues, dysphagia comes in varying severities. For example, some people have problems swallowing certain foods and/or liquids. Other people cannot swallow at all.

What are the signs of dysphagia?

There are some signs that you can look for when asking if you or a loved one has dysphagia. When asking yourself if you have dysphagia, ask:

•Do you get the feeling that food is stuck in your throat or chest?

•Do you drool saliva often?

•Do you have a wet, gurgly-sounding voice when you eat or drink?

•Do you have an issue with food being brought back up, sometimes through the nose?

•Do you have an issue with coughing or choking when you eat or drink?

•Are you unable to chew food properly?

If any of these signs or a combination of these signs are present, then dysphagia may be the cause.
